Lawyer Petitions NBC, Demands Ban or Regulation of Big Brother Naija Over Indecent Content
Human rights lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has petitioned the NBC to ban or strictly regulate Big Brother Naija.
He says the show promotes indecency, violates broadcast laws, and threatens public morals and youth values.
Human rights lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to urgently take action against the reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, either by banning it completely or enforcing stricter regulations on its content.
In a formal petition addressed to the regulatory body, Idam accused the show of spreading indecent and explicit material that violates provisions of the NBC Act of 1999. He described the current season, which is in its second week, as being filled with unfiltered obscene and suggestive content that has no place on national television or social media.
He pointed out that despite the show being rated for adults, its clips are often shared widely across platforms, making it easily accessible to younger audiences and the general public.
Referencing past actions by the NBC, where music videos by popular artists like Olamide, Reminisce, Wizkid, and Phyno were banned for indecency, Idam questioned why Big Brother Naija, which in his view presents even more disturbing content, continues to air without consequence.
He emphasized that the show lacks any educational, artistic, scientific, or cultural value, and warned that its influence could further erode societal morals already weakened by rising insecurity and other challenges.
Idam urged the NBC to act within 30 days by restricting the program to strictly controlled channels meant only for adult viewers and ensuring that its producers do not promote its content openly on social media.
Failure to take action, he warned, would leave him with no choice but to seek legal redress in court.
