A violent clash between farmers and herders in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State has claimed the life of one man and led to the killing of several animals, including cows and sheep.
The spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the incident, which took place on Friday in Kaduna village, Bogoro LGA. He explained that the trouble began after the body of a farmer, identified as 40-year-old Irmiya Yohanna, was discovered.
According to Wakil, the village head, Emmanuel Bulus, reported to the police on August 7 that Yohanna had not returned home. A search party was quickly organized, and his lifeless body was later found in a farmland area. Upon receiving the report, a team of police officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) SP Fitoka Golda, visited the scene and transported the body to Bogoro General Hospital. A medical doctor there confirmed him dead.
Wakil said, “A preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was suspected to have been killed by unknown persons. This led to some angry locals attacking herders, during which about 20 cows and 19 sheep were killed, while several other animals were injured.”
He added that police were able to rescue 249 cows from the scene. One suspect, identified as Ahmadu Mairiga, was arrested in connection with the death of Yohanna.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment. He also met with the chairman of Bogoro LGA, Fulani community leaders, traditional rulers, and representatives of the Sayawa people to discuss ways to restore calm.
Addressing residents gathered outside the Bogoro Divisional Police Headquarters, the CP assured them that the command was working to uncover the truth behind the incident and ensure justice. He urged community members to remain patient and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
