Former PDP national chairman and ex-minister Audu Ogbeh has died at the age of 78.
His family described him as a man of integrity, service, and dedication to Nigeria.
Audu Ogbeh, a veteran Nigerian politician and former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has passed away at the age of 78. His family announced his death on Saturday, August 9, 2025, describing him as a man who lived a life of integrity, service, and dedication to the nation.

Ogbeh’s political career spanned over four decades, during which he held several key positions in government. He served as PDP national chairman from 2001 to 2005, stepping down after disagreements over political crises during the administration of then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In 2015, Ogbeh was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development under President Muhammadu Buhari, a role he held until 2019. During his tenure, he spearheaded agricultural reforms aimed at boosting food production, promoting self-sufficiency, and enhancing rural development. His policies contributed to renewed focus on Nigeria’s agricultural sector as a driver of economic diversification.
Earlier in his career, Ogbeh served as Minister of Communications from 1982 to 1983 in the Shehu Shagari administration. Before that, he was the deputy speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly between 1979 and 1982, where he began building a reputation for principled leadership and public service.
In a statement, the Ogbeh family expressed appreciation for the outpouring of condolences and support from friends, colleagues, and well-wishers. They also requested privacy as they mourned. “We thank friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their prayers and support during this time. We will appreciate some privacy while we mourn the loss of our patriarch,” the family said.
Tributes have poured in from political leaders, former colleagues, and citizens, many of whom praised Ogbeh’s contributions to governance, party leadership, and national development. His legacy as a principled statesman, reform-driven minister, and advocate for agricultural growth is widely acknowledged.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
