NYSC Denies Withholding Corps Member’s Certificate Over Government Criticism

NYSC has denied claims it withheld a corps member’s certificate over criticism of government.

It says her service was extended for missing mandatory biometrics clearance, a breach of scheme rules.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed social media reports alleging that it withheld the Certificate of National Service of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye (state code LA/24B/8325) over her criticism of the government.

In a statement, the NYSC described the claim as “completely false,” stressing that the matter was strictly disciplinary.

It explained that Rita was among 131 Corps Members whose certificates were withheld for legitimate reasons. Her service year was extended by two months after she failed to take part in the April 2025 biometrics clearance, a violation of the scheme’s bye-laws.

The statement noted that the extension was a routine measure applied to all Corps Members who breached the same rule, adding that her case was not treated differently.

“The same rules apply to everyone. Service extension for non-compliance is a long-established practice in the NYSC and should not be politicized,” it said.

The NYSC urged the public to view the issue objectively, reaffirming its commitment to upholding its duties in line with the constitution.
