Obasanjo Library Condemns EFCC Midnight Raid, Demands Apology

OOPL has accused EFCC operatives of injuring guests during a midnight raid at its Abeokuta complex.

Management claims the armed officers disrupted a private event without a warrant, causing panic and chaos.

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) has criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over a midnight operation at its premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the library’s Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, EFCC operatives stormed the complex around 2 a.m., disrupting a private event and leaving several guests injured as they scrambled for safety. The statement alleged that the armed officers, led by a man identified as Olapade, fired shots and threatened to kill those present.

Ortese described the action as a violation of fundamental human rights and the OOPL’s rights as a corporate citizen. He noted that the private gathering had police officers on duty, with additional personnel deployed from Kemta Police Station, yet none of them were informed of the EFCC raid.

“The invasion caused panic and chaos, resulting in injuries to participants and creating fear among residents within the complex,” the statement read. The management insisted the event had been publicly advertised in advance and accused the EFCC of failing to present a warrant.

The OOPL has demanded an explanation and a public apology to those affected, warning it would seek legal redress and push for sanctions if the commission fails to respond.

Meanwhile, the EFCC announced via its X handle on Sunday that its Lagos Zonal office conducted an operation in Abeokuta, during which 93 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested. The commission did not directly address the OOPL allegations in its post.
