OAU Student Commits Suicide After Failing Exams

OAU mourns medical student Ajibola Ibitayo, who allegedly died by suicide after failing exams.

The vice-chancellor urged students to see setbacks as opportunities and not life’s end.

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the death of a Part-Two medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, who allegedly took his own life after failing his examinations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the examination results released on Wednesday showed that Ibitayo, a student of the Faculty of Dentistry with matriculation number DEN/2021/023, would have to repeat Part Two for another academic session. He had already repeated the same level in the previous session.

According to the statement, the student, whose father is a medical doctor, reportedly injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the incident as deeply saddening and urged parents to teach their children that setbacks in academics or life should not be seen as the end, but as opportunities to reassess and work toward future success.

He encouraged students to view failure as a stepping stone to greater achievements, while extending condolences to the deceased’s family, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the university community.

Bamire prayed for God’s comfort and strength for all those affected by the loss.
