The president’s spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, announced the development in a post on X on Monday, saying the policy will initially take effect in ten public hospitals before being extended to federal medical centers and teaching hospitals across the country.

According to Bwala, the initiative is aimed at easing the financial burden on thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related conditions, many of whom struggle to afford life-saving treatment.

“The development, which will first commence in ten public hospitals, will provide relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases, many of whom cannot pay for the dialysis,” he said.

He added that more federal medical centers and teaching hospitals will be included before the year ends to expand access nationwide.

Bwala reminded that President Tinubu had previously approved free caesarean sections in federal hospitals to reduce maternal deaths. He said the new decision shows the government’s commitment to making healthcare more affordable for Nigerians.
