NANS Condemns Assault on Corps Member in Anambra, Demands Justice
NANS has condemned the assault of Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer by Anambra vigilante operatives.
The student body described the incident as a shameful attack on dignity, safety, and national service.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the reported assault on Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626) by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by its National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Samson, the student body described the incident as a “shameful violation of dignity, safety, and fundamental rights” of a young Nigerian serving her country under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
According to NANS, information provided by the NYSC revealed that the vigilante operatives “forcefully entered a Corps Lodge under the pretext of investigating unlawful activities, a claim which has not been substantiated.” It added that Jennifer, who happened to be visiting the lodge at the time, was physically assaulted by the security operatives.
The association condemned the act, describing it as unjustified and alarming. “This action is not only indefensible but also represents a serious assault on the ideals of national service, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of human rights,” the statement noted.
NANS expressed worry about what it termed “the growing pattern of unregulated security outfits acting beyond the limits of legality and accountability.” It cautioned that such actions, if unchecked, could endanger the safety of Nigerian youths, particularly corps members deployed across the country.
The student body called on the Anambra State Government and other relevant authorities to immediately conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted. It stressed that deterrent action is necessary to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
“It is imperative that Corps Members across Nigeria feel safe in their residences and primary assignments,” NANS insisted, adding that the continued safety of NYSC participants is critical to the success of the national service scheme.
The association also pledged solidarity with Jennifer, reaffirming its resolve to stand by Nigerian students and youths in times of injustice. “NANS stands with Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer and reiterates its unwavering commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian students and youths. Justice must not only be served but must be visibly seen to be served,” the statement concluded.
