The 19-year-old later died in hospital, leaving teammates, fans, and family devastated worldwide.
The University of the Philippines (UP) has confirmed the devastating news of the passing of its newly recruited Nigerian basketball player, Israel Osamudiame Friday. The 19-year-old forward collapsed during a training session on Tuesday, August 19.

Friday, who was just weeks away from his 20th birthday on September 6, was practicing with the Fighting Maroons at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman when the incident occurred. He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital but, unfortunately, was pronounced dead, despite the tireless efforts of medical personnel.
In a statement reported by Spin. Ph, Bo Perasol, Director of the UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. “We are heartbroken to confirm that our new recruit, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice yesterday. He was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital, where, despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel, he passed away,” Perasol stated. He emphasized that the university community is maintaining close communication with Friday’s family and has committed to providing full support during this difficult time. “We ask everyone to respect his family’s privacy as they navigate this immense grief,” he added.
At 6-foot-10, Friday was considered one of the most promising young frontcourt talents in the collegiate basketball landscape of the Philippines. Originally from Abuja, Nigeria, he had recently transferred to UP from Centro Escolar University (CEU), where he had made a significant impact while playing for the Scorpions in the Universities and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL). Although he was set to complete a one-year residency before becoming eligible for UAAP Season 89, his recruitment was viewed as a major asset to UP’s aspirations.
Witnesses reported that Friday was fully engaged in drills when he suddenly collapsed. The team’s medical staff promptly administered first aid before he was transported to the hospital. The exact cause of death remains under investigation as medical authorities continue to look into the circumstances.
The unexpected passing of Friday has cast a grim shadow over the UP Fighting Maroons, who viewed him as a key player in their long-term strategies. His combination of height, athleticism, and potential made him one of the most eagerly anticipated recruits in recent years. The news of his death has resonated deeply within both the Philippine and Nigerian basketball communities, prompting an outpouring of tributes for the young athlete whose promising career and life were cut short far too soon.
