US Revokes Over 6,000 Student Visas Amid Tougher Immigration Crackdown

The U.S. government has revoked over 6,000 student visas, citing criminal and security violations.

Officials linked cancellations to offenses like assault, burglary, DUI, and terrorism-related concerns under immigration law.

The United States government has revoked more than 6,000 student visas as part of its latest effort to tighten immigration rules, citing violations that range from criminal offenses to national security concerns.

According to the State Department, most of the cancellations are linked to cases involving assault, driving under the influence, burglary, and what officials broadly described as “support for terrorism.” While the department did not specify the nature of such support, the administration has previously accused some students involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations of engaging in antisemitic activity.

Officials announced that around 4,000 visas were revoked due to criminal activities. Additionally, between 200 and 300 visas were canceled under Section 3B of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which defines terrorism as acts that endanger human life or violate U.S. law.

These revocations are part of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on international students and immigration. Earlier this year, student visa appointments were temporarily suspended before being reinstated in June under stricter screening measures.

The revised application process now requires applicants to submit their social media accounts for review, which immigration officers use to check for possible hostility toward US citizens, institutions, or the government.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed lawmakers that the government is prepared to cancel even more visas if necessary. “We will continue to revoke the visas of guests who disrupt our higher education facilities,” Rubio stated.

Despite the new restrictions, America remains one of the most sought-after destinations for international education. According to the Open Doors report, more than 1.1 million foreign students were enrolled in US colleges and universities during the 2023/24 academic year.
