Team Nigeria Dominates CAA Region II Championships with 25 Medals in Accra

Team Nigeria dominated the CAA Region II Senior Championships in Accra, topping the medal table with 25 medals.

The athletes won 15 gold, 8 silver, and 2 bronze, excelling in sprints and relays.

Team Nigeria delivered an impressive performance at the second edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region II Senior Championships, finishing at the top of the medal table at the University of Ghana Sports Complex in Accra.

Nigeria secured a total of 25 medals, including 15 gold, eight silver, and two bronze, to reaffirm its dominance in the region. The athletes excelled in the sprints and quarter-mile events while also achieving additional podium finishes in throws and jumps.

Burkina Faso ranked second with 21 medals (seven gold, 10 silver, and four bronze), followed by the Benin Republic, which earned 16 medals (six gold, four silver, and six bronze). Hosts Ghana, fielding 30 athletes, finished fourth with three gold, 11 silver, and nine bronze medals. Togo, Ivory Coast, and The Gambia also made it onto the medals chart at the two-day meet, which featured more than 250 athletes from across West Africa.

Nigeria capped off their campaign with victories in both the men’s and women’s 200m finals, as well as the 4x400m relays. National Sports Festival 100m champion Chidera Ezeakor clocked a personal best of 20.77 seconds to win gold in the men’s 200m, finishing ahead of Ghana’s Edwin Gadayi (21.14 seconds) and Marizuk Shaibu (21.21 seconds).

In the women’s 200m, Anita Enaruna claimed victory with a time of 23.91 seconds, followed closely by compatriot Maria Thompson, who secured silver in 24.01 seconds. Gambia’s Sey Isatou took home the bronze with a time of 24.25 seconds.

On the opening day, Nigeria’s Oloaolu Olatunde won gold in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.60 seconds, while Chioma Nweke took the women’s 100m title in 11.62 seconds, marking both athletes’ first senior international victories.

This year’s performance exceeded Nigeria’s 2024 results, where the team finished with 13 gold, four silver, and one bronze medal.medal.
