The Edo State Government has taken full responsibility for the hospital expenses of Miss Elizabeth Obi, a final-year student who was recently involved in a road accident in Auchi. Obi was reportedly hit by a truck on September 7, 2024, along the Auchi axis of the Benin-Auchi Expressway.

Following the incident, she was admitted to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) on September 11, 2024, where she has been receiving treatment. Her case gained wide attention after a social media advocate, known as VDM, brought it to the public space, drawing calls for government intervention.

Governor Monday Okpebholo responded by directing that her medical bills be settled. This was confirmed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, who led a government delegation to visit Obi at the hospital. He assured her family that the state would not only cover her current expenses but also provide the necessary support to ensure she recovers fully.

“The governor has taken full responsibility for the victim’s medical expense which has delayed further progress, as her parents lack the financial capacity to bear it. The administration is committed to the well-being of the citizens, especially in times of distress,” Iyamu said during the visit.

Medical officials at ISTH revealed that Obi had spent time in the hospital’s intensive care unit but was gradually responding to treatment. However, Dr. Obagaye Olakunle Michael, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at ISTH, explained that she still requires a specialized laser surgery to clear an obstruction in her airway. The procedure cannot be carried out at ISTH because the hospital lacks the necessary equipment, and arrangements may need to be made for it to be done in Kaduna.

Governor Okpebholo, according to Iyamu, was deeply touched by Obi’s condition and stressed his commitment to ensuring that Edo students are supported in achieving their dreams, even in difficult circumstances.

The intervention by the state government has provided relief to Obi’s family, who had struggled with the financial burden of her treatment.
