Former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja has been confirmed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, with his coronation scheduled for September 26, 2025, at the historic Mapo Hall.

Governor Seyi Makinde approved Ladoja’s nomination after Oba Owolabi Olakulehin’s death in July. This development marks a significant moment in Ibadan’s unique and rotational chieftaincy system, which has long been celebrated for its orderly succession process.
The upcoming coronation has generated widespread anticipation across Nigeria, as it combines Ladoja’s distinguished political career with a revered cultural tradition. As a former senator and governor, Ladoja holds considerable influence in both politics and Yoruba traditional institutions, a dual legacy that observers believe will shape his reign.
Governor Makinde paid homage to the Olubadan-designate and described the event as a reaffirmation of Ibadan’s respect for heritage and unity. “We are very proud of our traditional institution in Ibadanland and its unique succession system,” the governor stated in a post on X.
Ladoja’s installation is expected to attract dignitaries from across the country, underscoring Ibadan’s cultural significance and the enduring importance of the Olubadan throne in Nigeria’s traditional leadership structure.
