In a statement released on Saturday, August 23, the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the arrest was carried out by officers of the Rapid Response Squad attached to Akwuzu. He explained that Godwin was apprehended on Friday at Nkpor, near the commercial hub of Onitsha.

“Following credible intelligence, operatives intercepted and arrested one Akpan Godwin, 65, who was found with 1,100 rounds of live ammunition,” Ikenga stated.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted to being involved in the illegal arms trade and reportedly provided information on other individuals connected to the criminal network.

Ikenga added that the police have intensified efforts to track down Godwin’s accomplices and dismantle the wider syndicate responsible for supplying ammunition across the state.

“The Command has expanded its investigation and launched a manhunt to ensure all collaborators are brought to justice,” he said.
