The initiative is part of the National Automotive Policy, which aims for 40% of local content in vehicle production and intends for 30% of total production to consist of electric vehicles in the near future, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

During the inauguration on Monday, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Senator John Enoh, stated that the center would provide training for youths, artisans, and technicians in modern automotive skills, including electric vehicle maintenance and advanced diagnostics.

He emphasised that the project is designed to drive innovation, technology transfer, and position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global automotive industry.

“The centre is part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen the automotive industry and boost economic growth,” Enoh stated, stressing that the program would expand opportunities, create jobs, and help reduce unemployment-related challenges.

The Ikorodu facility is one of 21 automotive training centres across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, ensuring broader access to skill development nationwide. Enoh added that more centres would be established to deepen industrial capacity and stimulate local economies.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the automotive sector as the foundation of industrial development. He noted that the centre would expose trainees to advanced diagnostic tools and service protocols used in global workshops, thereby raising Nigeria’s technical standards.
