Sokoto Governor Announces Monthly Allowances for Imams and Mosque Staff
Governor Ahmed Aliyu has introduced monthly allowances for Imams, deputies, and Mu’azzins in Sokoto State.
The initiative also allocates funds to Jumu’at Mosques, boosting Qur’anic education and Islamic propagation.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu launches a major initiative to spot Islamic clerics and Qur’anic education in the state. In a historic move, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has announced the introduction of monthly allowances for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins across the state.

This initiative also includes substantial monthly allocations for Jumu’at Mosques, reinforcing the state’s focus on Islamic propagation and clerical support.
The announcement was made on Saturday during the graduation ceremony of 111 Qur’an memorizers from the Sokoto branch of the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation. The event, attended by prominent Islamic scholars, political figures, and the Sultan of Sokoto, marked a significant step toward supporting religious leaders and the youth in memorizing the Qur’an.
Governor Aliyu announced that Jumu’at Mosques will now receive monthly allocations ranging from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000, with the amount varying according to the mosque’s classification. Additionally, Imams, deputy Imams, and Mu’azzins will receive monthly allowances to help them carry out their religious duties effectively.
He emphasized that Islamic affairs play a crucial role in his administration’s Nine-Point Smart Agenda, ranking immediately after security as a top priority. This echoes the Governor’s deep commitment to religious and spiritual growth within the state.
As part of this broader vision, the Governor instructed the management of the Qur’anic school to identify a suitable site for a permanent location, pledging his government’s full support in establishing the institution. Royal and Political Endorsements for the Initiative.
The event received extensive acclaim from prominent figures, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who praised both the foundation and Governor Aliyu for their efforts in promoting Islamic values and fostering peaceful coexistence within the state. Aminu Sufi, speaking on behalf of former Governor Aliyu Wamakko, encouraged guardians to actively inspire and support their children in memorizing the Qur’an.
Senator Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Lawal Liman, reaffirmed his continued backing of the foundation and revealed a donation of ₦22 million, in addition to providing food items for the graduating students and schools. Each of the 111 graduates was presented with ₦20,000 and clothing materials from the state government, underscoring the state’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of Qur’anic scholars.
The event concluded with beautiful recitations from the Qur’an and the presentation of awards, celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of the graduates. Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, represented by his son Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, also discussed the foundation’s ongoing efforts to expand Qur’anic education to other parts of Nigeria.
