FAAN Begins Major Reconstruction at Lagos International Airport

Reconstruction has kicked off at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport, prompting FAAN to warn passengers of possible disruptions.

Travelers are advised to leave early as the ₦712bn upgrade begins in Terminal One.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that reconstruction work has commenced at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

In a travel advisory released on Friday, the agency advised passengers to leave for the airport much earlier than usual to avoid delays or missed flights, warning that ongoing renovations would likely disrupt normal operations.

The project is part of a large-scale upgrade in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Earlier on August 1, the Federal Executive Council approved over ₦900 billion for key aviation infrastructure, with the rehabilitation of MMIA’s Terminal One identified as a top priority.

According to Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, the renovation involves dismantling the existing structure to its bare frame and rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems from scratch. The upgrade is estimated to cost ₦712.25 billion and is scheduled for completion within 22 months.

FAAN also urged passengers to strictly follow traffic instructions around the airport, use only designated car parks, and avoid unnecessary visits to the terminal during the period of construction, citing limited space.

“We appeal for your cooperation and understanding as we work to deliver a modern facility that meets global standards,” the authority said.
