Lagos police arrested a man posing as the “Obi of Lagos” during a fake coronation.
Officials say the suspects planned to unveil a bogus billion-naira palace before officers intervened.
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man who falsely presented himself as a traditional ruler, styling himself the “Obi of Lagos,” during an unauthorized installation ceremony.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, disclosed the development in a statement issued Wednesday in Lagos.
According to Oluseyi, the 65-year-old suspect a native of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State was arrested along with three alleged accomplices aged 41, 51 and 65.
Police investigations showed the group planned to unveil a model of a supposed ₦1.5 billion “Palace of the Obi of Lagos State” at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, on Saturday. Acting on intelligence, officers sealed off the venue to prevent a disturbance and protect unsuspecting guests from being misled.
The statement explained that the Command deployed conventional officers, the Eko Strike Force and other tactical units to secure the area, ensure the event did not take place, and maintain public order.
Oluseyi added that the suspects are in custody while detectives continue their inquiry into the incident. He noted that the outcome of the investigation would be made public and that those involved would be charged in court once procedures are complete.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, used the occasion to caution Lagos residents about impostors exploiting traditional institutions. He stressed that the police would act firmly against anyone who undermines the state’s laws or threatens public peace.
Jimoh also underscored that such fraudulent activities are illegal under Lagos statutes and warned the public to remain alert to individuals or groups seeking to exploit cultural and traditional symbols for personal gain.
Oluseyi assured residents that the Command remains committed to enforcing the law decisively to protect public order and uphold the integrity of Lagos State’s cultural heritage.
