NERC has warned Anambra residents to stop funding transformers, poles or cables themselves.
Officials stress electricity distribution companies, not consumers, are responsible for providing and maintaining all power infrastructure across communities.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has cautioned electricity users in Anambra State to stop paying for transformers, poles or cables, emphasizing that only the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is responsible for providing and maintaining power infrastructure.
This message was delivered during a town hall and complaints-resolution meeting in Awka, organized to address widespread worries from communities that have been covering costs meant for the distribution company.
Representing NERC’s Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Mrs. Aisha Mahmud, the Commission’s Head of Consumer Protection, Dr. Zubair Babatunde, explained that maintaining and upgrading electrical facilities falls strictly under the duties of DisCos, not consumers.
Mahmud urged attendees to keep records of any demands by EEDC officials for payments toward infrastructure and send them promptly to NERC for action. She assured the public that the Commission actively monitors DisCo activities to protect customer rights.
She added that customers dissatisfied with the services they receive should submit formal complaints through the proper channels, noting that NERC is committed to holding power distribution companies accountable and ensuring residents’ concerns are addressed fairly.
The event drew a large number of Awka residents who shared their experiences with the regulatory team, with several issues receiving immediate attention from NERC officials on site.
