Nigeria’s House Appropriations Committee raised concerns over slow budget execution but received assurances of improvement.

Finance officials pledged full 2024 implementation and stronger delivery on grassroots projects before year’s end.

The House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations has voiced concerns about the pace of Nigeria’s budget execution but said it received firm assurances from top finance officials of improved delivery before the end of 2024.

Committee Chairman Hon. Abubakar Bichi spoke after a closed-door meeting in Abuja with the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning, the Debt Management Office, and the Accountant-General of the Federation. He said discussions centered on the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts and the status of their implementation.

Finance and Economy Coordinating Minister Wale Edun told lawmakers that the 2024 budget has achieved around 80 percent implementation so far. He noted that the National Assembly has extended its validity to December to ensure full execution, with priority given to grassroots infrastructure such as roads, irrigation, and other community-based projects.

Budget and National Planning Minister Senator Abubakar Bagudu highlighted the close collaboration between the executive and legislative arms, saying ongoing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are beginning to yield tangible results.

Both ministers reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to delivering on the 2024 and 2025 budgets in full, stressing that they will continue to work with lawmakers to ensure effective deployment of funds and better outcomes for Nigerians.
