Police in Moradabad are investigating after a mother put her newborn baby inside a fridge.
Doctors say the case involves postpartum psychosis, and the rescued child is now safe.
Authorities in Moradabad’s Karula community are investigating a disturbing case in which a 23-year-old woman reportedly placed her 15-day-old son inside a refrigerator during what doctors believe was a severe bout of postpartum psychosis.
Family members said the incident occurred on Friday, September 7. According to their account, the woman, overwhelmed by the child’s constant crying, allegedly put him in the refrigerator and then fell asleep.
It was the infant’s cries that drew the attention of the grandmother, who ran to the kitchen and discovered him in the fridge. She quickly pulled him out and rushed him to a nearby clinic. Doctors confirmed the baby was unharmed and in stable condition.
Hospital officials withheld the mother’s identity for privacy reasons. Relatives told local reporters that they initially thought she had been affected by supernatural forces and tried traditional remedies before seeking medical help.
When her condition failed to improve, she was admitted to Archna Raj Psychiatry and De-Addiction Centre. Psychiatrist Dr. Kartikeya Gupta, who is overseeing her case, diagnosed her with postpartum psychosis, a serious but treatable mental health disorder that can occur after childbirth.
Dr. Gupta explained that the woman is now receiving counselling and medication, adding that her recovery is progressing under close supervision.
