NSC Pledges Full Support For Team Nigeria At World Athletics Championships In Tokyo

The National Sports Commission pledged full support for Team Nigeria at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

Led by Tobi Amusan, fifteen athletes will compete in Tokyo aiming for podium finishes.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has assured its full backing for Team Nigeria as the athletes prepare to compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, which begin on September 13 and run until September 21.

Nigeria will be represented by a 15-athlete contingent, headlined by world record holder and former champion in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan.

NSC promises support and encouragement

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said the Commission would continue to provide the necessary support to ensure Nigeria’s athletes succeed on the global stage.

“The Commission will continue to provide all the support they need and firmly stand behind them as they fly our flag in Tokyo. This is a moment of pride for our nation, and we trust our athletes to compete with determination and secure podium finishes,” Olopade stated.

Nigeria’s athletes to watch in Tokyo

Beyond Amusan, the team includes some of Nigeria’s top-performing athletes across various events:

  • Kayinsola Ajayi (men’s 100m)
  • Israel Okon (men’s 100m)
  • Udodi Onwuzurike (men’s 200m)
  • Samuel Ogazi & Chidi Okezie (men’s 400m)
  • Ezekiel Nathaniel (men’s 400m hurdles)
  • Charles Godfred (men’s long jump)
  • Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (men’s shot put)
  • Prestina Ochonogor & Ese Brume (women’s long jump, with Brume a silver medalist at the 2022 edition in Eugene, USA)
  • Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons & Obiageri Amaechi (women’s discus, with Onyekwere-Lyons the African record holder)
  • Rosemary Chukwuma (women’s 100m)
  • Sade Olatoye (women’s hammer throw)

Team Nigeria will be looking to return to the medals table after a disappointing outing at the 2023 edition in Budapest, Hungary, where the country failed to secure a single podium finish.

With Amusan leading the charge and experienced stars like Ese Brume and Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons in the mix, expectations are high that Nigeria can deliver a stronger performance in Tokyo.
