Former two-weight world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has died at 46 in Greater Manchester.

The British legend was found at home, with police saying no suspicious circumstances involved.

Former two-weight world champion boxer Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46, Britain’s Press Association confirmed on Sunday. Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester. The police stated they do not consider the death suspicious.

“Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45 am today, where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances,” a spokesperson said.

Hatton, nicknamed “The Hitman,” rose to prominence in the early 2000s with his relentless, high-pressure fighting style. He became a world champion at both light-welterweight and welterweight, earning a reputation as one of Britain’s most beloved fighters.

His career highlights include a stunning victory over Kostya Tszyu in 2005 to claim the IBF light-welterweight title, which catapulted him to global fame. Hatton later faced boxing icons Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in mega-fights that drew huge audiences, cementing his status as a household name in the sport.

Despite his success, Hatton spoke candidly about the mental health struggles he faced after retirement, becoming an advocate for awareness of depression and related challenges among athletes. His openness made him a respected figure beyond boxing.

In July 2025, Hatton announced plans for a professional comeback against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai later in the year.

Tributes have poured in from across the boxing community and beyond. Britain’s former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wrote on Instagram: “RIP to the legend Ricky Hatton, may he RIP. There will only ever be 1 Ricky Hatton. Can’t believe this, so young.”

Former light-welterweight world champion Amir Khan described Hatton as a “mentor, warrior, and one of Britain’s greatest boxers,” adding a powerful message about mental health: “Sometimes the hardest fight happens in silence, in the mind. Mental health isn’t weakness; it’s part of being human. We must talk about it.”

Promoter Matchroom Boxing also issued a statement: “We are saddened to hear the news of Ricky Hatton’s passing. Our thoughts and condolences are with Ricky’s friends and family at this tragic time. There’s only one Ricky Hatton.”

Hatton’s blend of grit, charisma, and crowd-pleasing style made him a fan favourite. Known for his connection with supporters, particularly in Manchester, he will be remembered not only for his titles and memorable fights but also for his authenticity and resilience inside and outside the ring.
