Blackout Hits Akwa Ibom As Aba/Itu Power Line Collapses
Power supply to Akwa Ibom and parts of Rivers stopped after the Aba/Itu transmission line collapsed.
TCN said engineers are working urgently to fix the fault and restore electricity soon.
Electricity supply to Akwa Ibom State and parts of Rivers was cut off on Saturday, September 13, 2025, following the collapse of the Aba/Itu 132 kilovolt transmission line.
The incident, confirmed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has plunged homes and businesses in the affected areas into darkness.
According to Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, the forced outage occurred at approximately 1:03 am due to a line trip that immediately disrupted the bulk power supply to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED).
“This incident interrupted the bulk power supply to PHED and cut off electricity to Akwa Ibom State,” she said.
Mbah assured residents that TCN engineers had been dispatched to the site and were working “around the clock” to identify the fault and restore the collapsed line.
“Our maintenance crew has promptly responded to the situation and is working diligently to restore power supply to the affected areas. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and assure you that power will be restored as soon as repairs are completed,” she added.
The outage has hit major towns including Uyo, Eket, and other parts of Akwa Ibom, as well as communities within PHED’s network in Rivers State. Businesses and households, already grappling with high fuel costs, are under additional pressure as many have resorted to generators to sustain operations.
Mbah explained that forced outages could result from technical faults, weather-related incidents, or sudden system disturbances. She urged patience, emphasizing TCN’s commitment to swift resolution.
“We understand the hardship that power interruptions cause to residents, businesses, and essential services. Please be assured that we are committed to completing the necessary repairs in the shortest possible time,” she said.
TCN said it is investing in capacity upgrades and network expansion to reduce outages and stabilize supply.
For residents and businesses in Akwa Ibom and parts of Rivers, the hope remains that engineers will complete repairs quickly and restore regular electricity supply in the coming days.
