The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed the loss of four senior staff members who died in Tuesday’s fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos.

According to the agency, the victims were on duty at one of FIRS’ two offices located on the sixth and seventh floors of the building when the blaze broke out. Those who died have been identified as Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager).

In a statement issued by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman, the service said it was devastated by the loss. It explained that security officers immediately contacted fire services upon detecting the incident, but thick smoke had already engulfed parts of the building before help arrived.

The statement described the deceased staff as dedicated and professional, assuring their families of full support during this period of grief. It also noted that FIRS is cooperating with Lagos authorities to determine the cause of the fire and is reviewing safety measures across all its offices nationwide to prevent a recurrence.

Emergency responders said an investigation is underway to establish the exact cause of the fire.
