NNPC MD Maryamu Idris Appointed As OPEC National Representative
NNPC appoints Maryamu Idris as Nigeria’s new National Representative to OPEC, boosting the country’s global oil voice.
Her leadership experience positions her to strengthen Nigeria’s influence in production quotas and energy policy.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced the appointment of Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The development was confirmed in a statement on the corporation’s official X handle on Wednesday, describing her new role as a pivotal step in advancing Nigeria’s energy interests within the global oil cartel.
“We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC),” the statement read.
Idris has held multiple leadership positions across Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, including:
- Head of Pricing and Valuation at NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division
- Technical Advisor to Nigeria’s OPEC Delegation
- Contributor to oil sector reforms via the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Oil and Gas Implementation Committee (OGIC)
- Founding role in Nigeria’s Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) engagement
She holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Abuja and an M.Sc. in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland.
In her new capacity, Idris becomes a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), where she will contribute to technical deliberations and policy recommendations on global oil markets.
She will act as Nigeria’s principal technical liaison within OPEC, working closely with the OPEC Governor and national stakeholders, including NNPC Limited, NUPRC, and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
NNPC said her appointment will strengthen Nigeria’s voice in negotiations on production quotas, pricing stability, and sustainable energy policies, at a time of heightened volatility in global oil markets.
“In her dual roles, she will play a pivotal part in shaping both national and international energy strategies,” the statement added.
Her appointment also reinforces Nigeria’s pledge to remain compliant with OPEC’s production rules.
Recently, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, assured that Nigeria would not exceed its assigned quota, even as it seeks adjustments to reflect its capacity.
Maryamu Idris is expected to be central in balancing Nigeria’s domestic oil goals with its commitments to OPEC’s collective strategy.
