NGO Sponsors 226 Inmates For GCE To Support Rehabilitation
CELSIR sponsors 226 inmates across Nigeria to sit for the General Certificate Examination.
The initiative aims to boost education, skills and reintegration opportunities within the correctional system.
The Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) has sponsored the registration of 226 inmates across Nigeria for the General Certificate Examination (GCE), reaffirming its commitment to advancing education in the country’s correctional system.
The formal presentation of the sponsorship was made to Ope Fatinikun, Assistant Controller General of Corrections, Zone A Command. Beneficiaries were selected from facilities in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Rivers, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
CELSIR’s Executive Director, Joke Aladesanmi, said the initiative is part of the NGO’s Education for Correctional Centres Program, which provides formal learning, literacy training, and digital skills development.
“Education remains one of the most powerful tools of transformation. When incarcerated individuals are allowed to learn, they gain not only knowledge but also confidence, marketable skills, and a renewed sense of purpose. This is the foundation for building a more productive life after incarceration,” Aladesanmi said.
She added that the program equips inmates with globally recognized qualifications that can ease their reintegration into society. Aladesanmi also expressed gratitude to CELSIR’s partners for their continued support in expanding the organization’s reach.
In his remarks, the Assistant Controller General of Corrections thanked CELSIR for its intervention and pledged to monitor the beneficiaries closely to ensure positive outcomes.
