LASTMA Issues Stern Warning Against Unauthorized Vehicle Stickers

LASTMA warns transport unions against using unauthorized stickers in place of official vehicle registration.

The agency says offenders risk impoundment and legal action as enforcement is stepped up.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has cautioned transport unions and their affiliates against the use of unauthorized stickers as substitutes for official vehicle registration identifiers.

In a statement released on Sunday, LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said the practice was illegal and posed significant risks to public safety.

The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the stickers as a violation of existing laws and a direct threat to the credibility of the government’s vehicular registration system.

Bakare-Oki emphasized that only constitutionally empowered agencies have the authority to register vehicles in Lagos State. He warned that vehicles operating with “union stickers” or other unauthorized symbols would be impounded immediately, with offenders facing full legal sanctions.

“The proliferation of unauthorized identifiers undermines law enforcement efforts and could endanger the safety of residents,” Bakare-Oki said.

To tackle the issue, LASTMA announced plans to intensify surveillance in collaboration with security agencies and enforcement bodies. The move aims to ensure that all vehicles comply strictly with official registration requirements.

Bakare-Oki appealed to transport unions to respect traffic laws, emphasizing that compliance is not merely a matter of administrative order, but a critical step toward safeguarding public security.
