Commercial banks and other financial institutions across Nigeria will remain closed on Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, in observance of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha celebration. This closure follows the declaration of public holidays by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Monday, June 2, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The information was conveyed through an official statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The two-day holiday is meant to allow Muslim faithful across the country to commemorate Eid-ul-Adha in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Minister Tunji-Ojo took the opportunity to extend his best wishes to the Muslim community in Nigeria. He encouraged them to embrace and practice the values of faith, obedience, and sacrifice, which are central to the festival and were epitomized by the Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon Him). He also urged Muslims and the general public to utilize the festive period to offer prayers for national unity, stability, and prosperity.
The minister emphasized that the public holidays are not only for religious observance but also a time for reflection and recommitment to the country’s progress. He pointed out that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains committed to implementing policies that will revive the nation’s economy and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians. According to him, the ongoing reforms are geared towards fulfilling the promises of the Renewed Hope Agenda and bringing about positive transformation.
He added that the active participation of all citizens in rebuilding the nation is essential. He called on Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity, to contribute positively to the country’s development and work together towards reclaiming Nigeria’s reputation as a leading force on the African continent.
In light of the temporary shutdown of banking halls nationwide, customers have been encouraged to take advantage of digital banking platforms during the holiday period. These platforms, which include mobile banking apps, internet banking services, USSD codes, and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), will remain fully operational throughout the break.
Customers should note that while withdrawals at ATMs operated by their banks remain free of charge, transactions conducted at machines operated by other financial institutions will attract additional fees. The use of electronic channels is expected to ensure that Nigerians are not deprived of essential banking services despite the closure of physical branches.
Financial experts have also advised customers to plan ahead by performing any urgent banking tasks before the holidays begin. Businesses that rely on cash transactions or physical bank visits are encouraged to prepare accordingly to avoid disruptions.
As the country prepares for the Eid-ul-Adha celebration, the government has reassured citizens of its commitment to security and peaceful festivities. Law enforcement agencies are expected to be on high alert to ensure the safety of lives and property during the holidays.
In closing, the Ministry of Interior extended warm wishes to the Muslim community and all Nigerians, expressing hope that the period would be filled with joy, spiritual growth, and renewed dedication to the nation’s collective progress.
