Royal Air Maroc Pays NCAA Fine for Passenger Rights Violations

Royal Air Maroc has paid the sanction fine issued by Nigeria’s aviation regulator for passenger rights violations.

NCAA confirmed the settlement, warning tougher measures may follow if baggage complaints persist.

Royal Air Maroc has settled the sanction fee imposed on it by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) over consumer-protection breaches recorded earlier this year.

NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the development in a post on his official X account on Monday. He noted that the Moroccan carrier had received the highest fine among foreign airlines, largely due to repeated complaints of missing baggage and inadequate response to passenger concerns.

According to Achimugu, although the airline has shown better responsiveness to customers in recent months, baggage-related problems remain unresolved. He warned that if the trend continues, the NCAA may have no choice but to impose tougher penalties.

“We met with the airline virtually to understand the difficulties they face, but we have made it clear that they must explore new solutions if current measures are failing passengers,” he explained. “Our objective is to ensure Nigeria’s aviation sector is properly regulated and that travelers enjoy a smooth experience.”

The NCAA emphasized that sanction fees are not punitive but are designed to enforce compliance with consumer-protection standards and encourage airlines to improve passenger handling.

In recent months, the authority has enforced similar penalties on other operators. Earlier in September, Kenya Airways paid its own fine after being sanctioned over passenger-rights violations, including a widely reported case involving Nigerian traveler Gloria Omisore.

The NCAA clarified that paying a fine does not automatically resolve pending complaints, and it will continue to monitor airlines to ensure full compliance with regulations.
