Onanuga Praises Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Says Critics Will Be Proven Wrong

Bayo Onanuga has hailed the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway as President Tinubu’s most transformative project.

He said critics will regret opposing it, noting the road is already easing travel time for commuters.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has defended the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, describing it as one of President Bola Tinubu’s most transformative projects. He said that those opposing the road construction would eventually regret their criticism once the project is completed.

In a Facebook post, Onanuga recounted a personal trip he made from Ajah to Ikeja on Friday morning. According to him, the journey, which usually lasts well over two hours during peak traffic, was cut to just over an hour with the help of the new highway. He explained that even though construction work is still in progress, the completed stretch from Ogombo to Ahmadu Bello Way has already eased movement for many road users.

Onanuga narrated how a navigation app initially estimated his travel time at two and a half hours but later redirected him to the new coastal road. He said the route allowed him to cover the distance to Ahmadu Bello Way in less than 25 minutes, with only minor traffic congestion observed near a fuel station. He praised both the vision behind the project and the quality of work being carried out by contractors, adding that the road has already begun to deliver benefits ahead of its full completion.

Calling the highway “a gift to Nigerians,” Onanuga argued that it will drastically reduce travel time, improve connectivity, and strengthen commerce along Nigeria’s coastal states.

The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway is a 700-kilometre project stretching across nine states. It is one of the most ambitious infrastructure undertakings in Nigeria in recent years and is expected to ease traffic congestion, promote trade, and open up new economic opportunities along the coastal corridor once it is completed.
