Anambra Declares Tuesday School-Free Day to Honor Teachers

Anambra State has declared Tuesday, October 7, a school holiday to honor teachers after World Teachers’ Day.

Governor Soludo approved the break to recognize educators’ dedication and impact on education.

The Anambra State Government has announced that all schools across the state will observe a holiday on Tuesday, October 7, to honor teachers for their dedication and contribution to education.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo approved the school-free day following the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, which was marked globally on Sunday. The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, confirmed the development in a statement released in Awka on Monday.

She explained that the governor’s decision was aimed at giving teachers the recognition they deserve for their impact on the state’s education system. “Since the 2025 World Teachers’ Day fell on a Sunday, His Excellency has approved Tuesday as a school-free day to celebrate and honor teachers in the state,” the statement read.

Chuma-Udeh further revealed that members of the Solution Parents League, a group of parents supporting the governor’s education reforms, would hold a mega endorsement march to appreciate Soludo’s achievements in the education sector. The march, according to her, will be joined by the Association of Private School Owners.

“All teachers, parents, and school proprietors are expected to gather at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, by 8:00 a.m. to honor the governor and celebrate teachers for their service to humanity,” she said.

The celebration follows renewed calls by teachers’ unions across the country for improved welfare and full implementation of the 65-year retirement policy for educators. During nationwide events marking this year’s World Teachers’ Day, education stakeholders lamented the challenges faced by teachers, including poor pay, inadequate facilities, and the slow execution of government promises.

They urged both federal and state authorities to prioritize teachers’ welfare, improve school infrastructure, and implement existing policies that would make the teaching profession more rewarding.

With Tuesday’s declaration, Anambra joins other states that have recognized the importance of education and the people who sustain it. The state government reaffirmed its commitment to continue investing in the education sector to ensure every child has access to quality learning opportunities.
