Rivers Secretariat Fire: No Casualties Recorded, Government Confirms
Tension filled Port Harcourt on Monday evening after a fire erupted at the Rivers State Secretariat Complex.
Officials confirmed no casualties, saying quick emergency response helped prevent wider damage.
There was tension in Port Harcourt on Monday evening as fire broke out at a section of the Rivers State Secretariat Complex, destroying property and affecting several offices.

The fire reportedly started at the ground floor of the Podium Block shortly after the close of work, sending thick smoke into the sky. The incident occurred barely a week after Governor Siminalayi Fubara dissolved the Rivers State Pensions Board, whose office narrowly escaped the blaze.
According to reports, both Governor Fubara and the former Administrator of the state, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), had earlier approved the rehabilitation of the nine-storey complex.
The State Head of Service, Dr. Inyinge Brown, confirmed the incident to journalists, saying the fire resulted from an electrical fault. She added that no life was lost and that medical teams were on standby to manage any emergencies.

Brown explained that the fire was quickly contained through the combined efforts of the Rivers State Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service, the military, and private responders.
“We were informed that there was a fire incident at the right wing of the Podium Block. The Rivers State Fire Service responded immediately, alongside other partners such as the Federal Fire Service and the military. Their prompt action helped contain the situation,” she said.
The Head of Service also praised Governor Fubara for revamping the state’s fire department, noting that earlier investments in fire safety helped prevent greater damage.
She advised civil servants to always switch off electrical appliances and unplug devices before leaving the office to prevent similar incidents.
“These buildings are heritage structures, and we must all take responsibility to protect them,” she added.
Brown further assured that Governor Fubara’s administration will begin refurbishment of the affected offices soon.
