Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to continue empowering girls to reach their full potential as the world commemorates the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.

In a message to mark the occasion, themed “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” Mrs. Tinubu called for collective action to address the numerous challenges confronting young girls across the country. She said the day should serve as a reminder of the resilience and potential of girls who continue to overcome barriers in pursuit of education, dignity, and equality.
“To every brave girl striving to reach the classroom, walking miles for water, or carrying the quiet strength of displacement, you are seen, you are heard, and you are valued. Your courage lights the way to a brighter future,” she stated.
The First Lady emphasized that empowering girls through education, mentorship, and equal opportunities remains one of the most effective ways to secure a prosperous future for Nigeria. She explained that when girls are given access to quality education and opportunities to develop their skills, they are better equipped to lead their communities, contribute to the economy, and promote peace and stability.
“Let us come together to support our girls to reach their maximum potential,” she added, urging parents, teachers, and community leaders to play active roles in ensuring girls have the same chances as boys to thrive.
Senator Tinubu further highlighted the need to protect girls from all forms of abuse, early marriage, gender-based violence, and discrimination, noting that the government and stakeholders must create an environment where every girl can dream freely and achieve her ambitions.
The International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11, seeks to amplify girls’ voices, promote their rights to education, health, and equality, and inspire global action to eliminate gender-based challenges that limit their growth.
Through her Renewed Hope Initiative, Mrs. Tinubu restated her dedication to advancing programmes that enhance girls’ education, well-being, and leadership across Nigeria and Africa.
