Mentally Unstable Woman Arrested for Allegedly K!lling Fellow IDP in Borno
Police in Borno have arrested a woman accused of k!lling another female IDP in Monguno.
The suspect, believed to be mentally unstable, attacked the victim with a stick, leading to her de@th.
The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a woman alleged to have k!lled another female internally displaced person (IDP) in Monguno Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 10, 2025, around 4:35 p.m., when one Modu Kolomi, a resident of RRR IDPs Camp, reported to security authorities that a woman identified as Yagana Zara, 40, from the Water Board IDPs Camp, attacked his 30-year-old wife, Yagana Abba Butu, with a wooden stick.
Witnesses said the suspect, who is believed to be mentally unstable, struck the victim several times, causing severe internal injuries. Security operatives from Monguno immediately responded to the distress call, rescued the suspect from being lynched by an angry crowd, and took the victim to the General Hospital in Monguno, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that the victim’s remains were deposited in the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination before being released to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Following the incident, police authorities disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Maiduguri for further investigation. The suspect has also been taken to a state-owned psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation to determine her psychological condition before prosecution.
The Monguno area, which hosts several displaced persons’ camps, has faced multiple humanitarian challenges, including overcrowding and mental health concerns among residents affected by years of insurgency in Borno State. The police assured the public of a thorough investigation and reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents across IDP settlements.
