Fans Urge Nwabali to Stay Calm Ahead of World Cup Qualifier
Super Eagles fans have urged goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to stay calm and focused ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic.
The Chippa United star, under fire for recent errors, remains key to Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
Nigerian football fans have called on Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to remain calm and focused as the team arrived in Uyo for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday.

The Chippa United goalkeeper was seen arriving at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Sunday, where fans repeatedly told him to “calm down” in a video shared by Ademola Victor TV. The clip showed Nwabali walking with team officials as supporters cheered while expressing concerns over his recent form.
The appeal came after a challenging week for the Super Eagles, who were forced to make an emergency landing in Luanda, Angola, when their chartered plane from South Africa developed a cracked windscreen. The team later continued their journey safely and landed in Uyo.
Nwabali, who became a fan favorite after his performances at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, has faced criticism for a series of mistakes in recent qualifiers. His first major error came during the 1–0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, where he received a yellow card for a reckless challenge. The goalkeeper again came under scrutiny during Nigeria’s 2–1 win over Lesotho after fumbling a cross that led to a late goal. Moments later, a misunderstanding with defender Semi Ajayi almost resulted in another equalizer.
These incidents have triggered divided opinions online. While some fans continue to back him, others argue that his recent errors should see him dropped from the starting lineup.
Popular rapper Odumodublvck defended the 28-year-old, describing him as “an amazing goalie” and “the best since Enyeama.” Another fan, Onah Kosisochukwu, said the goalkeeper only needed encouragement, noting that “two errors from anxiety don’t define his quality.”
Football analyst Dr. Kelechi Anyikude also condemned the backlash against Nwabali, saying he would learn from his mistakes. However, others such as social media user Bloke claimed Nwabali’s recent displays were “hurting Nigeria’s chances,” while some urged the coach to give second-choice goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye a chance.
There have also been suggestions that Nwabali’s struggles may be linked to personal challenges, as he lost both parents earlier this year. Some fans called for compassion, saying grief could have affected his focus and performance.
Still, a few supporters argued that the issue lies more in attitude than ability. Dr. George, a football analyst, said Nwabali sometimes appears “too confident” even after making mistakes.
Calls have also grown for the return of Maduka Okoye to the national team once his suspension ends. Commentators believe more competition for the starting position could help the goalkeeping department improve.
Despite the divided opinions, many fans still regard Nwabali as an important figure for Nigeria’s qualification hopes. The Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C with 14 points, three behind leaders Benin Republic. A win in Uyo, combined with a favorable result between South Africa and Rwanda, could secure Nigeria’s place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As the decisive match approaches, Nwabali’s composure may prove vital, both for his confidence and for the Super Eagles’ dream of returning to the World Cup stage.
