NCAA Warns Airlines Against Delaying Passenger Refunds Beyond 14 Days

NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu has warned airlines against telling passengers that ticket refunds take four weeks.

He said aviation rules require refunds to be processed within 14 days and urged passengers to report violations.

The spokesperson of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, has cautioned domestic airlines against informing passengers that flight ticket refunds take up to four weeks.

In a post shared on his X handle on Sunday, October 13, Achimugu stated that such claims contradict existing aviation regulations, which mandate airlines to process refunds within 14 days.

He noted that Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023 remains valid and binding, emphasizing that no airline has the authority to impose its own rules contrary to the official guideline.

Achimugu wrote that domestic airlines must stop misleading passengers about refund timelines, stressing that the NCAA is the only regulator empowered to set such standards.

He urged affected passengers to report any airline that insists on a four-week refund policy by forwarding the communication to his official email, as well as to Ifueko Abdulmalik and the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) of the NCAA.

“Enough of this,” he added. “We cannot all claim to be improving the aviation industry while duplicating rules that undermine the Authority and treat passengers unfairly.”
