A Taraba State University student has apologized for wearing a nun’s habit during a Costume Day event.
She admitted the act was disrespectful and sought forgiveness from the Catholic Church and Christians.
A student of Taraba State University, Endurance Achikare Igbagri, has issued a public apology to the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo and the wider Christian community after she was criticized for wearing a nun’s habit during the university’s recent Costume Day celebration.
Images and videos from the event, which quickly spread across social media, showed Igbagri and a few other students dressed in religious-themed outfits resembling those worn by Catholic priests and reverend sisters. The display drew backlash from members of the Catholic Church, who described it as offensive and a mockery of their faith.
In her apology letter addressed to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, Reverend Fathers, Catholic faithful, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Igbagri admitted that her decision to wear the outfit was thoughtless and disrespectful. She expressed regret for her actions, describing them as “completely unacceptable” and done out of “ignorance” rather than malice.
She further stated that she never intended to offend the Catholic Church or ridicule its sacred symbols, adding that she has learned from the incident and will be more mindful of her choices in the future. “I take full responsibility for my mistake and sincerely seek forgiveness from the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, all Christian leaders, and the entire Christian community,” she wrote.
The apology comes after widespread public criticism and calls for disciplinary action from some religious groups, who said such actions undermine the sanctity of the Church. University authorities are reportedly reviewing the matter to determine whether further steps should be taken to prevent similar incidents in future school events.
