Police Launch Investigation Into Death of 17-Year-Old Apprentice in Awka
The Anambra State Police Command is investigating the death of 17-year-old apprentice Chikamso Ejiofor.
Police say he had earlier reported a theft before receiving threats.
The Anambra State Police Command has begun a full investigation into the mysterious death of a 17-year-old apprentice, Chikamso Ejiofor, whose lifeless body was discovered in a compound at Umuzocha, Awka. The incident reportedly followed threats he received after exposing a theft at Eke Awka Market.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Command received a report around 10:55 a.m. on October 5, 2025, from a resident who returned home from a church vigil to find the boy’s body within her premises.
Officers from the Central Police Station, Awka, promptly visited the scene, took photographs, collected evidence, and moved the body to a nearby hospital, where a doctor confirmed the teenager dead. Subsequent investigations identified the deceased as Chikamso Ejiofor, an apprentice trader at Eke Awka Market.
Ikenga added that the victim’s parents were contacted but surprisingly expressed no interest in pursuing the case, describing their late son as troublesome. They reportedly filed an affidavit and a written letter to formally withdraw from the investigation.
Despite the parents’ position, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoye Orutugu, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case, insisting that the police have both a legal and moral obligation to investigate any unnatural or suspicious death.
Orutugu assured that the Command would conduct a transparent and comprehensive probe to determine the true cause of Chikamso’s death, emphasizing that justice must prevail.
The police also appealed to residents of Awka to remain calm and support the investigation with credible information. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order, stressing that every life in Anambra State is of equal value and deserving of justice.
