Gombe police confirm the driver in the fatal crash involving the state commissioner has died.
Authorities mourn the loss and praise the dedication of those serving to protect public safety.
The Gombe State Police Command has confirmed that the driver involved in the tragic road accident that took the life of the Gombe Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Col. Abdullahi Bello (retd.), has also passed away.
The accident occurred on Thursday along the Kwami to Malam Sidi to Gombe highway. It claimed the lives of the commissioner and his police orderly, Corporal Adamu Hussaini, on the same day. The driver was rushed to a hospital for treatment but died on Friday as a result of the severe injuries he sustained.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, released a statement on Saturday confirming the new development. He explained that the victims were returning from Maiduguri in Borno State before the crash happened. The commissioner had attended a regional consultation focused on disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former fighters, as part of ongoing efforts to support security in the region.
“The Gombe State Police Command wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Gombe State, as well as to the families of the late commissioner, his police orderly, and the driver,” Abdullahi said. He added that the police deeply feel the impact of the tragedy and will always appreciate the dedication of the men who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.
He described the late officials as loyal individuals who served the state with commitment to peace and public safety. He prayed that Almighty Allah grants their souls rest and comforts their families through this painful moment.
The Command assured the public that security agencies in the state remain united and will continue working to protect citizens, even in the face of such a heartbreaking loss.
