Peter Obi Reacts to U.S. Designation of Nigeria as Country of Concern, Calls for Urgent Reforms

Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to see the US decision listing Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” as a warning.

He said the move exposes worsening insecurity and leadership failures across the nation.

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed serious concern over the recent decision of the United States government to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC). He warned that the designation, along with reports suggesting possible military measures, should be a wake-up call to all Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Monday, Obi said the move reflects the worsening insecurity across the country and the continued failure of leadership to protect lives and ensure national stability.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with shocking loss of lives and property,” Obi stated. “According to Amnesty International, more than 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023. The unprovoked killing of Nigerians is deeply condemnable, and urgent steps must be taken to end it.”

The Labour Party leader said insecurity had existed before the current administration but argued that the situation has worsened due to what he described as a lack of competence, commitment, and accountability by those in power. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government of failing to show the leadership qualities needed to restore order and safeguard the country.

Obi called for urgent reforms in governance and renewed commitment from public officials to rebuild trust and strengthen national unity. He said Nigeria must return to a path where peace, truth, and justice guide leadership decisions.

Highlighting the need for strong international relations, Obi appealed to both the Nigerian and U.S. governments to embrace dialogue rather than confrontation. “As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been partners in promoting peace and security. That partnership should not weaken,” he said. “Both countries must work together to address the rising security challenges and ensure stability in the region.”
