The Enugu State Government has taken decisive action against rising insecurity by demolishing a suspected criminal hideout masquerading as a religious center in Onicha-Enugu-Ezike, located in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

The structure, allegedly operated by a self-proclaimed prophet named Chinedu Ezedike, was discovered to be a base for various criminal activities. According to official investigations, the facility was used to carry out illicit operations including suspected ritual practices, kidnappings, and other forms of organized crime. Authorities determined that the so-called worship center had no legitimate religious function and was instead serving as a cover for unlawful behavior.
This operation is part of a wider effort by the Enugu State Government to clamp down on the misuse of religious and traditional institutions for criminal purposes. In recent months, the state has intensified its surveillance and intervention strategies to identify individuals and groups exploiting spiritual platforms for illegal activities. Targets of the crackdown include fake clerics, native doctors, and self-styled spiritualists who have been linked to acts that endanger public safety.
A government spokesperson emphasized that the demolition was carried out after thorough investigations and verification from security agencies. “We are committed to uprooting all sources of insecurity in our state, especially those hiding under the guise of religion or culture,” the official stated. “This particular structure had been under observation, and its activities were clearly detrimental to the peace and security of the community.”
The local community has responded positively to the demolition, expressing relief and support for the government’s efforts. Some residents, who requested anonymity, noted that the area had been plagued by unexplained disappearances and rising tension in recent times. They believe that dismantling the hideout is a critical step toward restoring order.
“This is a welcome development,” said one resident. “We have long suspected that something was not right with that place. It is reassuring to see the government take meaningful action.”
Another community member added, “This shows that no matter how criminals try to disguise their operations, justice will eventually catch up with them.”
The Enugu State Government reiterated its resolve to continue tracking down similar operations throughout the state. Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all.
