The Anambra NYCN restated its opposition to extending national officers’ tenure or raising youth age.

The chapter said recent actions against its chairman violate the council’s rules and have no basis.

The Anambra State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria has again made it clear that it will not support any attempt to extend the tenure of national officers or change the officially recognized youth age bracket of 18 to 35 years.

The chapter had earlier in September 2025 openly rejected the Tenure Elongation Congress held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. That congress proposed increasing the youth age limit to 45 years, a move the Anambra chapter described as against the constitution of the Council.

A previous statement signed by former State Chairmen Chief Obumnike Asuzu, Dr Nwabufo Nwankwo, Comrade Frank Maduka and the current Chairman, Comrade Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi, had congratulated former NYCN President Sukubo Sara Igbe Sukubo on completing his second and final term.

After the controversial congress, however, Sukubo was said to have announced that Obi had been suspended as the Anambra State Chairman and also attempted to appoint an acting chairman. Obi dismissed the announcement, calling it unlawful and without any constitutional backing.

Obi speaks on alleged offence

Obi said the only thing his leadership was accused of was insisting that the Council must follow due process and respect its constitution. He explained that Sukubo had already finished his final term in office, and with a new national leadership in place, there was no basis for interfering in the affairs of Anambra State. He described such attempts as having no chance of success from the beginning.

He also raised concern that people who are no longer within the youth age category are playing a major role in causing internal conflict, even though they previously benefited from the order and stability achieved under his leadership.

The Anambra NYCN restated its support for the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, which has strongly opposed tenure extension across the country.

Obi described the actions taken against him as driven by personal revenge and advised members who are now over the age limit to focus on advisory roles instead of creating problems within the Council.
