Chelle Reacts as Super Eagles Force Draw Against Russia
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has praised his team’s fighting spirit after a 1-1 draw against Russia in Friday’s friendly in Moscow.
He admitted to early struggles and changes in the squad but lauded the second-half improvement, stressing the need for patience as the team develops.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has shared his thoughts following Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-1 draw with Russia in Friday night’s international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.
The match saw Nigeria come from behind after an early own goal by Semi Ajayi gave Russia the lead in the 27th minute. Genk striker Tolu Arokodare came off the bench to level the score for the Super Eagles in the 71st minute, salvaging a result in a tough encounter.
Speaking after the match, Chelle acknowledged the quality of the opposition and the difficulties his team faced during the game.
“It was not an easy game because we played against a very good team,” the Malian tactician admitted. “Russia put us under a lot of pressure, and they have strong technical abilities.”
Chelle noted that the Russians capitalized on their early opportunities, while Nigeria’s first-half display lacked sharpness and cohesion.
“They had their chance in the first half and converted it. We had ours, but their goalkeeper made a brilliant save,” he said. “In the second half, they had two more chances, but we made ours count and got the equalizer.”
Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Chelle said he was more satisfied with the second-half showing, particularly in terms of pressing and movement.
“We didn’t play well in the first half. We didn’t apply our pressing game as we usually do, but we improved after the break. That pressing made a big difference for us.”
Chelle also pointed to the changes in the starting XI as a major factor in the team’s inconsistent rhythm.
“We made a lot of changes to the squad. Our usual pressing game became difficult to execute because some of the new players are still adjusting to our playing philosophy. We need to keep working on our structure and find the right balance,” he explained.
“It’s a work in progress. We’re giving opportunities to new talents, and I’m confident we’ll get stronger as a team.”
Despite the draw, the result extended Nigeria’s unbeaten run under Chelle, who took charge of the team in January 2025.
With more friendlies and qualifiers ahead, the Super Eagles boss remains focused on building a cohesive unit.
