Tinubu Mourns Legendary Folk Musician Mike Ejeagha
President Tinubu mourned the passing of Igbo music legend Mike Ejeagha at 95, praising his role in preserving culture through storytelling.
He also commended Enugu State for honoring Ejeagha and prayed for comfort for those mourning his loss.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Igbo folklorist and musician, Mike Ejeagha, who passed away on Friday at the age of 95. In a condolence message released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President celebrated Ejeagha’s lifelong dedication to preserving Igbo traditions through music.
Tinubu described the late artist as a cultural icon whose unique style of storytelling and songwriting played a vital role in promoting and protecting the heritage of the Igbo people. He acknowledged that Ejeagha’s contributions went beyond entertainment, serving as a source of inspiration and education for generations.
“May the spirit and values of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s music continue to remind us that music has the power to revive, heal and redirect energy towards worthy causes that help build our nation,” the President stated.
President Tinubu also praised the Enugu State Government for recognizing and honouring Mike Ejeagha while he was still alive. He commended Governor Peter Mbah for taking steps to acknowledge the musician’s work and ensure his impact was celebrated during his lifetime.
The President offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Ejeagha’s soul and asked that God provide strength and comfort to his family, friends, and all who are grieving his passing.
Mike Ejeagha, often referred to as “Gentleman,” was widely respected for using his songs to reflect wisdom, moral values, and the customs of the Igbo people. His music, marked by thoughtful proverbs and engaging narratives, became a powerful tool for cultural education and preservation.
