OPay Brings N1.2 Billion Scholarship Scheme to Benue State University

OPay expands its ₦1.2B scholarship scheme to Benue State University, empowering students nationwide.

The initiative aims to ease financial burdens and boost academic excellence.

In a significant stride towards educational development and youth empowerment, Nigeria’s leading financial service provider, OPay, has extended its multi-billion naira scholarship initiative to Benue State University (BSU). This move makes BSU the seventh university to benefit from the ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship program aimed at supporting undergraduates across the country.

The announcement was made during a formal presentation attended by senior representatives from both OPay and the university. Among those present were OPay’s Government Relations Manager, Muhammad Sani Muhammad; Chief Security Officer, Dr. Tersugh James Vandefan; CSR Manager, Itoro Udo; and Benue State Manager, Abena Peter Emmanuel. Representing BSU were the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tor Joe Iorapuu; the Registrar, Mr. Barnabas Terfa Hemba; the Bursar, Dr. Amos Otse Egwurebe; and Dr. Elijah Terdoo Ikpanor, Director of Advancement and Linkages.

This initiative is a major component of OPay’s corporate social responsibility strategy, which prioritizes access to quality education and investment in the nation’s youth. The scholarship program is designed to ease the financial pressures many students face, enabling them to dedicate themselves more fully to their academic and personal growth.

Speaking on the occasion, OPay’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Dauda Gotring, emphasized the company’s unwavering belief in education as a catalyst for national development. “We are honored to contribute to the academic journey of these promising young individuals at Benue State University,” he said. “This scholarship initiative is a reflection of our dedication to creating real opportunities for Nigerian youth and supporting their ambitions.”

Vice Chancellor Prof. Tor Joe Iorapuu expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, noting its far-reaching implications. “This generous support from OPay comes at a crucial time,” he remarked. “For many of our students, this scholarship is more than financial aid; it’s a life-changing opportunity that secures their academic future and inspires hope for their families and communities.”

With BSU joining the ranks of six other universities that have already benefited from the scheme, OPay is steadily advancing its mission to democratize educational access across Nigeria. The financial institution has reaffirmed its plan to reach more tertiary institutions in the coming years, making the scholarship program a nationwide effort.

Beneficiaries of the scholarship are selected based on merit and need, ensuring that talented students from diverse backgrounds have a fair chance to pursue their educational goals. As the initiative continues to grow, students from various states and regions can anticipate similar interventions that will ease their academic journey and broaden their future prospects.

Founded in 2018, OPay has established itself as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s fintech landscape. Its services span a wide array of financial operations, including money transfers, bill payments, airtime top-ups, merchant services, and card solutions. Licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and insured by the NDIC, OPay is widely recognized for its dependable infrastructure and lightning-fast service delivery.

By combining financial innovation with impactful social programs, OPay is not only transforming how Nigerians handle money but also how they access opportunities, one scholarship at a time.
