Senate Promises Reforms, Priority Projects as 10th National Assembly Begins Second Half

As the 10th Senate reaches its midpoint, lawmakers promise impactful reforms and stronger oversight for citizens.

Senator Bamidele says Nigerians should expect new bills focused on jobs, security, and accountability.

The Nigerian Senate has assured citizens that the second half of the 10th National Assembly will usher in a new wave of reforms, critical legislative interventions, and the execution of high-impact projects that will directly benefit the people.

This assurance was given by the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, in a statement released on Sunday. The statement was issued to mark the mid-point of the 10th National Assembly, which began its tenure in June 2023. Bamidele said the Assembly remains committed to fulfilling its constitutional role of lawmaking, representation, and oversight, with greater focus now being placed on delivering meaningful change across the nation.

Reflecting on the past two years of legislative work, Bamidele noted that despite the economic and security challenges confronting the country, the Senate had remained steadfast in performing its duties and passing bills that serve the national interest. He also praised the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio for steering the upper chamber with purpose, maturity, and dedication to national unity.

According to him, “The 10th Senate has worked tirelessly over the last two years to pass bills and motions that promote economic development, enhance national security, and protect the rights of citizens. As we enter the second half of our tenure, Nigerians can expect more strategic reforms, new policies, and projects that will touch the lives of ordinary citizens.”

Senator Bamidele stated that the Senate is fully aware of the expectations of the Nigerian people and is determined to continue in its drive for responsive and people-oriented legislation. He explained that several key bills are already in the pipeline, including those aimed at boosting job creation, strengthening the fight against corruption, and improving the quality of education and healthcare delivery.

Bamidele highlighted that oversight functions will be taken more seriously in the coming months to ensure that government ministries, departments, and agencies are effectively implementing policies and programs that align with the national development goals. He said the legislature would not hesitate to summon any government agency that fails to meet its mandate or mismanages public funds.

“We are not just focused on making laws. We are also committed to ensuring that every kobo of taxpayers’ money is accounted for and used for its intended purpose,” he said.

He further disclosed that the Senate would also work closely with the House of Representatives to ensure synergy between both chambers for smooth legislative processes. The collaboration, he said, is critical for passing the 2026 national budget on time and for implementing policies that will help stabilize the economy.

The Senate Leader also used the opportunity to call on Nigerians to remain patient and hopeful, noting that governance is a continuous process that requires commitment from both leaders and the governed. He urged the public to engage their representatives constructively and hold them accountable for promises made.

As the second half of the 10th Assembly begins, Senator Bamidele reaffirmed the Senate’s resolve to work for a more secure, prosperous, and inclusive Nigeria, promising that the legislature would continue to be a pillar of democracy and a voice for the people.
