Lagos Assembly Summons Uber, Bolt, Others Over Drivers’ Welfare Complaints

Lagos Assembly summons Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide over driver welfare complaints.

Hearing will address pay issues, safety lapses, and alleged violations of labor agreements.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned five major ride-hailing companies Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide to appear before it for a public hearing on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The invitation comes in response to a petition filed by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), which accused the companies of neglecting the welfare of their drivers and violating labor agreements. The union is demanding stronger regulatory oversight and better treatment for drivers operating under these platforms.

According to AUATON, ride-hailing drivers in Lagos face poor working conditions, are underpaid, and lack essential safety protections. The union claims that many drivers are left without any form of health coverage, legal support, or protection against threats, attacks, or unfair treatment by the companies or passengers.

The upcoming hearing will address several key issues raised in the petition, including allegations of exploitative pricing policies, the absence of transparent driver support systems, the disregard for agreed national labor standards, and efforts to suppress the union’s advocacy efforts.

AUATON also accused the ride-hailing firms of violating a national memorandum of understanding aimed at safeguarding app-based workers’ rights. They said the companies’ actions and lack of accountability are putting the lives of drivers at risk and contributing to a growing sense of insecurity and instability within the sector.

In response, the Lagos State Assembly is holding the hearing to understand the scope of the challenges and determine how best to regulate the industry. Lawmakers say the goal is to create policies that will ensure fair treatment, improved welfare, and greater security for drivers while maintaining a balanced relationship with the service providers.

The Assembly emphasized that all stakeholders would have the opportunity to be heard, and any proposed framework would prioritize the well-being of workers and the public alike.
