President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday arrived in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, for a condolence visit following the recent wave of deadly attacks that have claimed over 150 lives across several communities in the state.
The president’s aircraft landed at the Nigerian Air Force Base, Tactical Air Command in Makurdi at exactly 12:58 p.m., where he was received by top government officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and state lawmakers.
The visit comes days after a brutal assault on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, where suspected herders reportedly killed more than 100 residents in an overnight attack. In response, the Benue State government declared Wednesday a public holiday to honor the victims and ensure smooth logistics for the president’s visit.
During his trip, President Tinubu is expected to visit Yelwata to commiserate with families of the victims and inspect the aftermath of the attack. He will also hold a town hall meeting in Makurdi with key stakeholders including traditional rulers, security chiefs, lawmakers, and representatives of civil society to explore lasting solutions to the escalating violence in the Middle Belt region.
The president is accompanied by a delegation of federal lawmakers and top security officials, reflecting the administration’s commitment to tackling the security crisis in the region.
The Benue killings have sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for the federal government to intensify its efforts to secure rural communities. Survivors and local leaders have continued to decry the frequency and scale of the attacks, which have displaced thousands and left scores injured.
Tinubu’s visit is seen as a crucial step toward healing and reassurance, as the country awaits concrete policy actions to stem the tide of violence in one of Nigeria’s most volatile regions.
