Seun Kuti Says Sowore Is More Competent Than Peter Obi, Sparks Online Debate
Seun Kuti stirred controversy after declaring Sowore more competent than Peter Obi in politics.
His blunt take has reignited debates about leadership, reform, and tribal bias in Nigeria.
Renowned Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has ignited fresh debate on social media after stating that activist and politician Omoyele Sowore is more competent than former Anambra governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Kuti made the assertion during an Instagram live session where he interacted with fans about the current state of Nigeria. While lamenting the condition of the country and the deceptive nature of many political leaders, he was asked by a fan to choose who he believes is more competent between Sowore and Obi.
Without hesitation, the outspoken musician declared that Sowore is more capable, adding that even the fan who asked the question is “better than Peter Obi.” Kuti has long been vocal about his dissatisfaction with mainstream political figures, and this latest comment reinforces his consistent stance on radical political reform.
His remark rapidly gained traction online, sparking a flurry of mixed reactions across various social media platforms.
@chi_chi_maria, an Igbo user, weighed in:
“Y’all need to stop with the tribalism. I’m Igbo and I support Sowore because his ideology makes sense. He’s been calling for real reform for years but people ignored him. Meanwhile, PO had 8 years and more, yet no real change. Now he’s selling the same sweet talk. Wake up.”
@AMADIOHA01 tweeted:
“The Southwest will not stop coming for Peter Obi both individually and through the media. Seun spoke about Fulani herdsmen terrorists, but some people are more concerned with dragging Obi than addressing the killings.”
@folamiyi added:
“They won’t listen. I voted Obi last election but realized he’s not a politician—just an opportunist. Compare him to how Tinubu fought his way from opposition into power. Obi lacks that structure and grit.”
While many hailed Kuti for speaking what they described as “hard truths,” others criticized his stance as dismissive of Obi’s achievements and political experience. The debate continues to stir strong emotions among supporters of both Sowore and Obi as Nigerians reflect on the kind of leadership the country truly needs.
